Events for sensor changes with NXT

Hello,

I was looking with my sun into Monobrick and it works very well.

There is one item I am not sure if I fully understood the architecture: How can I monitore changes on the sensors and run a main programm in parallel?

Example: the main programm moves the mindstorm forward and uses the motors. I would like to react on an event from a sensor – e.g. ultrasonic sensor shows less than x centimenters available space.

Is there a way to subscribe to events? I have seen that there are different possibilities with V3 and its adapted firmware – but I running on NXT here.
